About

Small Chinese Red-Lacquer Travel Cabinet

This rare 17th-century travel shrine cabinet is an exceptional example of early Chinese portable devotional furniture—made for worship on the road and used by travelers, merchants, and officials who carried images of Buddha, Guanyin, or local deities for daily prayer. Cabinets of this scale and age seldom survive in such intact condition, making this piece particularly desirable.

Crafted from pine wood and finished in layers of black and red lacquer, the cabinet features painted door panels that retain fragments of their original imagery, now beautifully softened by centuries of handling. The lacquer has aged into a textured, mottled surface—rich with depth, organic wear, and natural patina.

A small hidden incense drawer is built into the base, an intimate feature that speaks to its ritual use; this drawer once stored joss sticks, charcoal, or small offerings. The bronze hardware—hinges, latches, and corner plates—are original to the cabinet and display the hand-forged irregularities typical of early metalwork.

While the lower black base plank is a later replacement, it stabilizes the cabinet without compromising its authenticity. The overall form remains true to early Chinese travel shrines: compact, functional, and deeply personal.

As an object, it carries the quiet presence of a devotional companion that has journeyed through generations—an intimate piece of spiritual history and a rare find for collectors of early Chinese furniture.

Note: The piece will be lightly touched up and conditioned by our restoration team prior to delivery.
