Rare Japanese Sado Island Isho Tansu with Original Iron Hardware

On Sado Island, in the Sea of Japan, the cabinetmakers of Ogi learned their craft building chests for ships. That maritime discipline (robust joinery, heavy hand-forged iron) carried into the clothing and merchant chests they went on to make, and Sado tansu became distinguished by their bold, ornamental hardware.

This isho tansu, a chest for kimono and treasured belongings, is a rare survivor: it retains its complete set of original hardware, something seldom found in Sado pieces. Deep reddish-brown lacquer forms a calm ground for the dark iron fittings, whose decorative forms sit across the façade like a signature of the island itself.

Preserved in superb condition, it is both a collector’s object and a living piece of furniture, as at home in a bedroom as it is in a curated interior that values craft, provenance and patina.
