Burmese Teak Loom Carving Fragment

This slender hand-carved teak figure originates from Myanmar (Burma) and was likely once part of a traditional wooden loom or weaving apparatus. In many Burmese and Northern Thai households, weaving tools were embellished with protective or symbolic figures—meant to bless the textile process, safeguard the weaver, and ensure harmony in the household craft.

Carved from a single length of aged teak, the figure features a stylised human form with simplified limbs, rounded head, and expressive facial markings. Below it sits a second, smaller carved figure, creating a totemic vertical composition characteristic of rural Burmese folk woodcarving. The elongated shaft would have been attached to a loom framework, serving both a functional and spiritual purpose.

The surface shows deep, naturally aged patina with worn carving lines and softened contours from generations of handling. Mounted on a minimalist black stand, the piece now reads as a sculptural, almost tribal artefact—quiet, refined, and rich with cultural history. Its slender verticality makes it a beautiful accent in curated interiors with a love for Southeast Asian craft and primitive forms.
