A beautifully aged Chinese Kang table originally used in a temple setting, distinguished by its thick layers of red and black lacquer and richly carved apron details. The table features deep relief carvings across the front and sides — floral scrolls, auspicious motifs, and stylised mythical forms — all softened by time and devotional use.

Crafted from a combination of pine and elm wood, the table exhibits the robust construction typical of northern Chinese Kang furniture. Its compact proportions and low height were designed for use atop a heated Kang platform, where monks or worshippers would sit, read sutras, or perform daily rituals.

The heavy lacquer surface, applied in multiple layers, has naturally distressed over time, revealing a beautiful interplay of red underlayers and black outer coats — a patina that only centuries of use can create.
