This hauntingly beautiful sculpture originates from the Jorai (Jarai) people of Vietnam’s Central Highlands, a community known for its animist beliefs and powerful woodcarving traditions. Jorai funerary statues were created as guardians for the deceased, placed around tombs during the Lễ Bỏ Mả (Abandonment-of-the-Tomb Ceremony). Their purpose was to accompany and protect the spirit of the departed as it transitioned to the next world.

Carved from dense hardwood and shaped with simple tools, the figure displays the raw, eroded texture characteristic of sculptures left exposed to the elements after burial ceremonies. The tall, narrow form, stylised facial features, and elongated limbs reflect Jorai aesthetic language—abstract, expressive, and deeply spiritual. The statue’s weathered surface, cracks, and softened contours tell the story of decades of ritual exposure to sun, rain, and time.

Pieces like this are increasingly rare, as traditional funerary practices have declined in many regions. Today, the sculpture stands as both an ethnographic artefact and a striking piece of contemporary art—minimalist in form, yet rich with cultural meaning and presence.
