The Official’s Hat Armchair — Guanmaoyi — is one of the most recognisable and culturally significant forms in classical Chinese furniture. Its defining crest rail, which flares outward at both ends, echoes the shape of the winged hats worn by imperial officials during the Ming and Qing dynasties. As such, the chair was historically associated with status, authority, and scholarly refinement.

Originally found in the homes of the literati, ancestral halls, and reception spaces, the Guanmaoyi was used for formal seating during ceremonies, visits from important guests, and occasions where hierarchy and etiquette were observed. Its upright posture was designed to encourage dignity, attentiveness, and moral presence — virtues highly valued within Confucian society.

This reproduction preserves the elegant proportions of the classical form: the continuous crest rail, the balanced horseshoe-like armrest, and the shaped back splat with its carved roundel.
