This antique Chinese scholar’s screen is finished in gilt black lacquer on wood and was traditionally used in the scholar’s studio for tea drinking and quiet contemplation. One side is painted with a classical landscape scene of mountains, temples, and houses, while the reverse is decorated with calligraphy, uniting pictorial art and literary expression.
