Chinese Carved Wooden Guanyin with Mandorla

This hand-carved wooden figure represents a seated Taoist deity, distinguished by its upright posture, formal robes, and stylised facial expression—all characteristic features of northern Chinese devotional sculpture. Originating from Shanxi province, a region known for its rich temple culture and surviving vernacular carvings, the piece would likely have been part of a household or small temple altar.

Carved from a single block of wood, the figure shows traces of its original black lacquer surface, now beautifully worn to reveal the warm, earthy grain beneath. The drapery and armour-like patterning across the chest are rendered in simplified, rhythmic lines—an aesthetic commonly associated with late-Qing provincial craftsmanship, where artisans conveyed spiritual presence through direct, expressive carving rather than fine academic detail.

Despite its age, the figure retains a strong sense of character: the squared shoulders, slightly forward gaze, and grounded seated form create a commanding yet humble presence. The softened contours, worn surfaces, and naturally aged patina all contribute to its authenticity as a ritual object that has been handled, venerated, and preserved over time.
