This Chinese coffer, originally finished in black lacquer on elm wood, represents the practical yet elegant cabinetry traditions of northern China. Coffers of this type were versatile household storage pieces—used for garments, documents, valuables, or everyday belongings—often placed in the main hall or bedroom of traditional homes.

The piece retains its original elm wood structure and black lacquer base, now beautifully softened by time. The front has been enhanced with later red and white painted panels, likely added in the early to mid-20th century to refresh the piece or follow regional decorative tastes. These stylised cloud-like and scalloped motifs bring a lively contrast to the otherwise restrained form, creating a layered surface history that reflects generations of use and adaptation.

Its shaped aprons, exposed joinery, and time-worn patina contribute to its charm as an antique object with both function and character. Today, the coffer works effortlessly as a low console, bedside chest, or sculptural storage piece—celebrated for its quiet presence and lived-in authenticity.
