About

Kutani Ware Shishi (Lion Dog)

This Kutani ware shishi (mythical lion guardian) is depicted in a dynamic crouching pose, gripping a decorative cloth in its mouth — a traditional motif symbolising protection, strength, and good fortune. The figure is richly ornamented with expressive facial features, scrolling mane details, and a patterned sacred ball beneath its paw. Executed in vibrant Kutani enamels, the piece displays a lively palette of red, blue, gold, and earthy tones, reflecting the bold decorative spirit characteristic of Shōwa-period Kutani ceramics.
