Burmese Buddha Carrier (Processional Palanquin Seat)

This ceremonial wooden structure was crafted in Burma as part of a Buddha carrier, a processional palanquin used during temple festivals and religious celebrations. The Buddha image would be placed on this seat, which was then lifted and carried through the streets by devotees. The form reflects a blend of Burmese craftsmanship and Chinese temple aesthetics, as it was made specifically for use in a Chinese temple community in Burma.

Carved from solid teak and finished in traditional red temple paint, the piece features auspicious cloud-scroll motifs along the crest rail and armrests. On both sides, iron brackets remain intact—these were designed to secure long wooden poles, allowing groups of devotees to shoulder the palanquin during processions. The spindle railings, panelled base, and decorative edges show strong folk craftsmanship and spiritual symbolism.

With decades of ritual use, the surface displays weathering, softened edges, and worn pigment, creating an authentic patina that speaks to its ceremonial life. Now mounted as a sculptural object, it carries rich cultural presence and historical storytelling into any interior.
