About

Burmese Ceremonial Drum

A traditional Burmese ceremonial drum carved from teak and finished with polychrome decoration.

Used by both ethnic minority communities and the wider Burmese population, drums of this type played an important role in temple rituals, village ceremonies, and festive gatherings. Rhythm was central to spiritual practice and communal celebration, marking auspicious moments and accompanying dance, procession, and prayer.

The form features a flared foot and cylindrical upper body, with traces of original painted bands in red and blue. The natural teak at the drum head contrasts with the vibrant decorative stem, revealing layers of age and use.
