About

1920s Round Sectioned Indian Wooden Mortar

This round sectioned Indian wooden mortar originates from Nagaland, India, and is crafted from durable saalwood, a native timber known for its strength and longevity. Dating back to the 1920s, it originally served as a mortar for grinding rice, an essential activity in preparing food and traditional beer in Naga households. The hole on the surface was use for rice grinding, highlighting its cultural significance. True to Naga craftsmanship, this piece is carved entirely from a single log of saalwood, without the use of nails or patchwork, making it an extraordinary example of traditional woodworking. With its functional history and rustic charm, this one-of-a-kind table is a testament to the resourcefulness and artistry of the Naga people, perfect for collectors or as a striking conversation piece.
