Satsuma Meiji Earthenware Lidded Vase with Foo Dogs

A finely decorated Satsuma earthenware vase with cover, richly hand-painted in polychrome enamels and gilt. The body features figural and floral scenes in intricate detail, while the shoulders are adorned with applied foo dog handles. The lid is surmounted by a boldly modelled foo dog finial, symbolising protection and prosperity. Characteristic of the Meiji period, the piece reflects the exquisite craftsmanship and elaborate decorative style for which Satsuma ware is renowned. Originally used as a lidded vase or incense vessel, it remains today a striking decorative object for collectors and interiors alike.
