About

Inkstone ""Stone in Spirit"" Dragon Motif Chinese ink Grinding Stone

A rectangular black stone inkstone richly carved in high relief, centered with a circular medallion depicting a coiled dragon amid clouds. The borders are decorated with scrolling waves, auspicious emblems, and mythological motifs, framing the recessed ink well to the side. The surface shows a natural sheen from use, enhancing the depth of the carved designs.

Inkstones such as this were an essential tool of the scholar’s studio, used for grinding ink sticks with water to produce ink for calligraphy and painting. The dragon, a symbol of imperial authority and strength, suggests that this inkstone was intended not only for practical function but also as a display of prestige and refinement.
