About

Gilt Lacquer Manuscript Chest (Sadaik) with Figural Scenes

In the monasteries of Burma, chests of this form, known as sadaik, were made to hold sacred lacquered manuscripts. They were objects of merit, commissioned and crafted with the care reserved for the texts they protected.

Here, the front is a field of gold. Figures and narrative scenes unfold across the surface in dense, rhythmic composition, framed by ornamental borders. Time has softened the gilding into a rich, uneven patina, letting the dark ground beneath glow through in places. Each worn edge is a trace of the hands and years this chest has known.

Monumental in scale and presence, it stands as a centrepiece: at the foot of a bed, in a living room, or anywhere a single object is asked to hold the room.
