This rare terracotta tile fragment originates from a Chinese tomb wall and is engraved with the figure of a plump, sorrowful woman rendered in shallow relief. The softly incised lines depict a “fat lady” figure — an idealised feminine form that was highly celebrated during the Tang dynasty, symbolising beauty, prosperity, and grace. The figure’s rounded silhouette reflects Tang-era aesthetic values, where fullness was associated with health, status, and elegance. The weathered surface, mineral encrustations, and irregular edges bear quiet witness to its funerary context and centuries of burial, transforming this once-architectural element into a powerful sculptural artefact.
