About

Chinese Scholar’s Table Screen

A Chinese scholar’s table screen, traditionally placed upon a writing desk to shield drafts, frame the scholar’s view, and create a contemplative atmosphere.

The central panel features a hand-painted figure rendered in expressive brushwork, surrounded by a subtle carved border. Such table screens were valued objects within the scholar’s studio, reflecting literary taste, philosophical refinement, and artistic sensibility.

The worn surface, layered pigments, and visible age speak to prolonged use within an interior setting — likely part of a literati environment.
