Chinese Lion Mask

This striking ceremonial mask was traditionally used in Chinese festivals and ritual performances. Carved from wood and finished in deep black lacquer, the mask features bold sculptural forms with finely worked details, including traces of blue pigment accenting the eyebrows and expressive, protruding moving eyes designed to animate the performance.

At the center of the forehead, a red medallion bears the Chinese character 王 (Wáng), meaning King—a symbol of authority, power, and protection. Such masks were often associated with guardian figures or commanding characters within ceremonial narratives.

Surviving examples of this quality are increasingly rare. Many masks were heavily damaged or destroyed during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, making this piece particularly significant for its strong condition, intact carving, and well-preserved surface patina. The sculptural volume, dramatic facial proportions, and traces of original pigment speak to both its ritual function and its presence as a powerful object in its own right.
