This antique Persian tribal carpet is a hand-knotted masterpiece crafted with 100% vegetable dyes and hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, dating back approximately 120 years. Originating from Heris, a village nestled on the slopes of Mount Sabalan in East Azerbaijan, northwest Iran — about 40 miles northeast of Tabriz — this piece represents the enduring legacy of Heriz rugs.

Renowned for their durability and timeless beauty, Heriz carpets are among the most hard-wearing Persian weavings, often treasured for generations. Nineteenth-century examples are frequently featured in major auction houses across the United States and Europe. The exceptional resilience of Heriz wool is attributed to the region’s unique geology — sheep grazing on pastures infused with copper from Mount Sabalan’s mineral-rich terrain produce exceptionally strong, lustrous wool.
