About

17th-Century Chinese Temple Money Chest in Black Lacquer

A rare surviving temple money chest from 17th-century China, this piece embodies the devotional life and architectural craftsmanship of early Qing–late Ming Buddhist temples. Chests of this type were positioned near altars or temple entrances to collect donations and offerings, which were used to maintain monastery life, support monks, and fund ritual activities. Because they held communal wealth, these chests were built to be extremely sturdy, with thick boards, reinforced framing, and minimal points of access.

This example is crafted from pine wood and finished in its original black lacquer, now beautifully worn from centuries of handling. The front panels are richly decorated with deeply carved relief motifs, including scrolling foliage, cloud forms, and symbolic frames — all elements drawn from temple iconography. Rows of domed studs outline the panels, reinforcing the structure while giving the surface a rhythmic, architectural quality.

Time has softened the lacquer, revealing layers of history and ritual use. Every abrasion, softened edge, and faded carving carries the memory of generations who passed by, bowed before it, or contributed offerings. As an artefact, it is both sculptural and deeply meaningful — a grounded presence that brings spiritual heritage into contemporary spaces.
Note: The piece will be lightly touched up and conditioned by our restoration team prior to delivery.
