1. BANGKOKIAN MUSEUM
Rediscover the Charms of Bangkokian Museum Time Capsule

Built during the 1930s, The Bangkokian Museum is a complex of four preserved old teak wooden houses set in a quiet, shady garden just off the beaten path of Old Town Charoen Krung Road in Bangkok.

Nestled away from the clamor of Old Town Charoen Krung Road, the Bangkokian Museum beckons with its timeless allure. A complex of four meticulously preserved teak wooden houses, dating back to the 1930s, stands as a testament to the grace and opulence of Thailand's upper-class during the WWII and King Rama V period (1868–1910).

As you step into this architectural oasis, a hushed garden envelops you, creating a tranquil backdrop for a profound exploration of Thai history and lifestyle. The houses, constructed in a blend of Western and Thai "Pan Ya" architectural styles, exude an exquisite charm influenced by the colonial era's introduction by missionaries. The wooden homes showcase a harmonious fusion of European aesthetics adapted ingeniously to thrive in the local, hot, and humid conditions.

With soaring ceilings adorned with intricately carved wooden panels – a functional respite allowing heat to dissipate – the Bangkokian Museum is a visual symphony of past and present. Each house preserves its original layout, containing a priceless collection of elegant furniture and ornaments that harken back to the Rattanakosin era. Wander through the rooms, and you'll discover a meticulous preservation of classic memorabilia, complete with original cabinetry and fixtures. The Bangkokian Museum encapsulates the essence of a bygone era, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the sophistication and charm of Thailand's cultural heritage.

2. JIM THOMPSON HOUSE
A Tapestry of Silk, Antiques and Intrigue

Home of the late James H.W. Thompson also globally renowned as “The silk king”, who made a fortune during the mid 20th century selling Thai silks, transforms into a museum.

In the post-World War II era, amidst the remnants of a war-torn world, an American officer named Jim Thompson found himself stationed in the vibrant landscapes of Thailand. Little did he know that his destiny was intricately woven into the threads of Thai silk, transforming not only the textile industry but also his own life in ways that continue to captivate the imagination.

Thompson's tale begins in 1945 when, as an officer in the OSS (predecessor to the CIA), he sent vibrant, hand-woven Thai silks to prestigious fashion houses in New York City, catching the discerning eye of Vogue's esteemed editor, Edna Woolman Chase. This serendipitous turn of events not only breathed new life into the faltering Thai silk industry but also laid the foundation for Thompson's burgeoning empire. Flush with success, Thompson embarked on a lavish venture – the creation of his canal-side residence, a symphony of six traditional teak homes sourced from the historic city of Ayutthaya, Thailand's former capital.

Surrounded by lush gardens, his abode became an architectural marvel, drawing comparisons to F. Scott Fitzgerald's Gatsby mansion for its legendary status as a socialite hotspot and the backdrop to extravagant society parties. As Thompson indulged his penchant for collecting, his home transformed into a haven for antiques, artworks, and religious artifacts. Each piece curated with precision, reflecting his eclectic taste and passion for preserving the rich cultural tapestry of Thailand.

The interiors of his residence became a testament to the harmonious fusion of East and West, an aesthetic reflection of Thompson's cosmopolitan lifestyle. Step into this time capsule of opulence, where guided tours offer a glimpse into Thompson's curated world. Marvel at the artifacts that bear witness to his travels and appreciation for craftsmanship. The air is thick with the echoes of grand soirees and the whispers of mysterious tales that surround the enigma of Jim Thompson. The tour takes a haunting turn as discussions unfold about Thompson's perplexing and still unsolved disappearance in the Malaysian jungles in 1967. The once vibrant silk merchant vanished without a trace, leaving behind a legacy etched in silk, antiques, and unanswered questions. His home, now a museum, stands as a testament to an era of elegance and intrigue, inviting visitors to unravel the threads of history woven into the very fabric of Jim Thompson's extraordinary story.

Today, his original home has been transformed into a museum, alongside a new “Jim Thompson Art Centre” situated in the same compound, featuring contemporary art exhibitions from around the world.
