About

Japanese Samurai Wine / Sake Gourd “Hyotan” Lacquered Calabash Flask

A traditional Japanese "hyotan" — a hollowed and lacquered gourd flask historically carried by samurai for wine, sake, or water on campaign, prized for its lightweight, naturally waterproof body. This example retains its characteristic bulbous double-gourd silhouette, finished in a warm reddish-brown lacquer that highlights the gourd's natural ridges and grain, with a braided cord neck strap for carrying. Mounted upright on a fitted wooden stand, the flask's honest, organic form and functional history give it a distinctive character beyond purely decorative gourds.
