Pair of Chinese Funerary Attendants

This rare pair of funerary figures was discovered in a tomb and originally placed to accompany and guide the deceased on their journey to eternity. Carved in simple yet expressive forms, the figures embody the spiritual beliefs surrounding the afterlife, where such objects served as protectors or companions beyond death. Finished in black lacquer with traces of red pigment, their surfaces bear the quiet marks of time and ritual purpose. After excavation, both pieces were sent to a laboratory in the Netherlands for a professional drying and stabilisation process, as they were found saturated with water. Today, they stand as deeply evocative artefacts, combining funerary symbolism with powerful sculptural presence.
