About

Fragment of Chin minority post

This rare fragment originates from a Chin minority funerary post or totem, traditionally erected as part of ritual practices honoring the dead and ancestral spirits. Carved from solid teak, the form has been shaped by time and exposure, resulting in a deeply eroded surface that enhances its sculptural presence and sense of age. The abstracted openings and vertical structure suggest symbolic rather than purely decorative intent, reflecting the spiritual and ceremonial role such posts held within Chin culture. Today, the fragment stands as a powerful ethnographic object and sculptural artefact, embodying both ritual significance and natural beauty.
