Nuristan Architectural Cedar Columns - Set of 5

A rare set of five antique architectural columns carved from aromatic cedar wood, originating from traditional highland homes in Nuristan, Eastern Afghanistan. These sculptural uprights display the region’s distinctive geometric and symbolic motifs — tiered forms, interlocking patterns, and deeply cut relief work that once signified protection, lineage, and spiritual beliefs within the household.

Historically, these columns supported the interior structure of Nuristani mountain dwellings, where a central hearth blackened the wood with soot over generations. Much of this soot has been carefully removed, revealing a warm, honey-toned surface and centuries of hand-carved detail. Each column is unique in proportion and carving, ranging from 205–212 cm in height, with an average 20 × 15 cm cross-section.

Mounted on custom metal stands, they now read as monumental sculptural objects — powerful, architectural, and deeply textural. A commanding presence for large interiors, lobbies, galleries, or collectors of tribal and ethnographic art.
