Chinese Scholar’s Armchair - Set of 2

A traditional Chinese set of 2 armchairs of scholar’s form, constructed in elm wood and finished in an unusually thin black and brown lacquer.

Typically, chairs of this type were coated in thick, lustrous red or deep black lacquer. This example, however, retains a more restrained and delicate surface treatment — the thin lacquer allowing the natural grain and texture of the elm to subtly emerge beneath.

The carved splat, shaped apron, and openwork details reflect classical Ming-inspired proportions, while the worn lacquer and exposed wood speak to generations of use. The lighter lacquer application suggests either a regional variation or an early decorative layer, supporting a dating of the late 18th to early 19th century.
