About

Shanxi Gilt Black-Lacquer Spirit House (Home Altar Shrine)

This beautifully aged spirit house originates from Shanxi Province, a region known for its rich architectural carving traditions and deeply rooted ancestor worship practices. In most Chinese households—especially during the Qing period—small domestic shrines like this were placed in a prominent location within the home to honour Buddha, household deities, and ancestral spirits. They served as a daily focal point for prayer, incense offerings, and remembrance rituals.

Crafted from elm and pine wood, the structure is finished in black lacquer with traces of original gilt decoration, now softened through time. The architectural form recalls that of a miniature temple pavilion: a projecting roof with carved eaves, supporting columns, and open side panels featuring hand-carved floral motifs symbolising purity, longevity, and spiritual protection.

The base shows a scalloped apron with worn gilding, evoking the quiet grandeur of traditional Chinese altars. The central chamber—once used to house ancestral tablets, small statues of the Buddha, or protective deities—now displays a beautifully aged patina, evidence of decades of devotional use.

Today, this spirit house stands as both a meaningful cultural artefact and a sculptural decorative object, bringing warmth, history, and spiritual presence into contemporary interiors.
