About

1920s Low Wooden Rice Grinding Table

This low wooden table originates from Nagaland, India, and is crafted from durable saalwood, a native timber known for its strength and longevity. Dating back to the 1920s, it originally served as a mortar for grinding rice, an essential activity in preparing food and traditional beer in Naga households. The table’s distinctive feature is its three holes on the surface, used for rice grinding. These multiple grinding areas suggest the table belonged to a larger tribal family, highlighting its cultural significance. True to Naga craftsmanship, this piece is carved entirely from a single log of saalwood, without the use of nails or patchwork, making it an extraordinary example of traditional woodworking. With its functional history and rustic charm, this one-of-a-kind table is a testament to the resourcefulness and artistry of the Naga people, perfect for collectors or as a striking conversation piece.
