This antique Chinese sutra cabinet was originally crafted for use in a Buddhist temple, where it served as a dedicated storage chest for sutras — sacred prayer books and scriptures essential to monastic life. Cabinets of this type were placed near altars or within scripture halls, protecting texts from dust, moisture, and light while keeping them accessible for daily chanting and ceremonial practice.

Constructed from elm wood and finished in red lacquer, the cabinet reflects the auspicious symbolism of the colour red in Chinese Buddhist culture: protection, spiritual vitality, and good fortune. The surface shows warm ageing, softening the lacquer into a beautiful patina that speaks to its long devotional use.
