Chinese Elm Armchair with Carved Backrest & New Rattan Seat

A rare surviving example of a traditional Chinese armchair, crafted from elm wood with traces of black and red lacquer that speak to its age and long history of use. The backrest features pierced and carved decorative panels, adding an elegant architectural detail characteristic of provincial craftsmanship. Typical of chairs from this period, most pieces have not survived intact—making this one especially collectible.

The seat has been newly re-woven in natural rattan to restore structural strength while maintaining the authenticity of the original frame. Its honest patina, worn lacquer, and sculptural silhouette make it a striking standalone accent or part of a curated antique interior.
