This beautifully weathered cabinet from Shanxi Province is an authentic example of early domestic Chinese furniture, originally crafted for everyday household storage. Its façade is constructed with multiple framed panels—an architectural design typical of northern China—and finished in a rich red lacquer, a colour associated with vitality, protection, and prosperity in traditional Chinese homes.

The cabinet’s surface shows a striking natural patina: layers of worn lacquer, crackling, and exposed wood grain that reflect decades of use. The pine and elm construction offers both strength and lightness, while the original iron hardware, softened by oxidation, enhances its rustic character.
