Indian Elephant Chair Bronze Palanquen with Lion Embellishments

This antique bronze double-seat palanquin, likely from 19th to early 20th century Southeast Asia or China, exemplifies a luxurious means of transport for high-ranking personalities across various cultures. The sand-cast bronze frame, adorned with intricate mythical animal motifs, reflects the regional artistry, while its iron-rod suspension system suggests it was carried by multiple bearers, offering both comfort and protection from the surroundings. The shape and design varied across cultures, from China to Persia, but always symbolized status and prestige. With its aged patina and contrasting yellow upholstery, this palanquin embodies the grandeur of traditional aristocratic travel.
