Model 242 MR Adjustable Chaise Lounge (Knoll International)

A Model 242 MR adjustable chaise lounge, originally designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1927. This example was produced in 1980 by Knoll International in the USA, and retains its Knoll labels — an unusual survival, as these often detach over time. The chaise features a thick, channel-upholstered black leather cushion resting atop a seamless tubular steel frame, with the cushion secured to the frame via leather strips wrapped around fifteen belting support straps and fastened with snap buttons. The design is adjustable, and the cantilevered steel frame reflects the clean, modernist lines characteristic of Mies van der Rohe's work. The stainless steel frame remains bright and undamaged, while the leather has developed light creasing and a pleasing natural patina consistent with age.
