Low Writing Desk (Gyeongsang, 經床) Joseon Dynasty. Korea

This low writing desk, known as a Gyeongsang 경상, was designed for reading and copying manuscripts while seated on the floor. Made of zelkova (elm) wood, it features a rectangular top with raised ends to prevent books and scrolls from slipping off during use and two front drawers with carved cloud motifs.

Gyeongsang were commonly found in Buddhist temples, where they were used for the copying and study of Buddhist scriptures, as well as in the sarangbang (men's quarters) of educated households, where they served as writing desks for Confucian scholars.

Their restrained decoration and balanced proportions reflect the aesthetic ideals of the Joseon literati, combining practicality with refined craftsmanship.
