This unusual wooden chair was designed as a child's toilet chair, combining the form of a small armchair with the practical function of a portable commode. Made from elm wood using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, it has acquired a rich patina through years of use.

The circular opening in the seat accommodated a removable ceramic or wooden chamber pot, while the thick rounded armrests and projecting footrest provided comfort and stability. Despite its utilitarian purpose, the chair is finely crafted, with decorative balusters and stepped corner finials that reflect the skill of Chinese cabinetmakers.

Used in prosperous households, these chairs allowed young children to relieve themselves indoors, particularly during the night or in winter. Because they were heavily used and rarely preserved, surviving examples are now uncommon.
