About

Antique Gilt Lacquer Chest on Tiered Red Stand

Raised on a stepped stand of red and dark lacquer, this chest has the bearing of a ceremonial object rather than a piece of furniture. Its gilded front panel catches the light softly beneath a surface mellowed by age, while the tiered base, banded in gilt, lifts it into quiet prominence, as though it were placed to be honoured, not merely used.

Presented today, it reads as sculpture as much as storage: a vessel of craft and devotion that brings warmth, history and a sense of ritual to an entryway, a gallery wall or a contemplative corner of the home.
