About

TAI YANG GONG Chinese Warrior Guardian Figure

A carved Chinese figure, most likely representing a solar or celestial deity, depicted in a formal, upright stance. The figure stands firmly grounded, with arms extended forward, clasping what appears to be a tablet or ceremonial object—an attribute often associated with ritual authority and offering.

His composed posture is restrained and dignified, emphasizing presence over movement. A full beard and mustache frame the face, symbolizing wisdom, rank, and reverence within traditional iconography.

The base is particularly notable. The upper tier is adorned with a Greek-key (leiwen) pattern, a motif long associated with continuity and order in Chinese decorative arts. Beneath, the lower section features openwork cutouts and scrolling cloud forms—auspicious symbols linked to harmony, elevation, and the celestial realm.

Such a base suggests the figure may have served a ritual or altar function, or was intended to elevate the object both physically and symbolically within a space. The surface presents a darkened patina with traces of gilding or polychrome, now softly worn, revealing layers of age and history.
