A delightful 19th century English tilt-top table crafted in lacquered papier-mâché, its shaped shield-form top hand-painted with a vibrant scene of exotic birds in flight above a tranquil lakeside landscape, framed by a lush border of colourful blooms including roses, dahlias, and chrysanthemums. Gilt banding traces the edge of the top. The table tilts on a turned and gilt-decorated baluster column, descending to a tripod base with scrolled, gilt-highlighted legs ending in brass castors, allowing the table to be moved with ease. A charming example of the Victorian fascination with japanned and lacquered decorative furniture.
