About

Hunan Folk Festival Mask in Red and Black Pigment

This striking hand-carved festival mask originates from Hunan province, a region known for its rich folk traditions and expressive wooden ritual objects. Such masks were typically used during Chinese New Year festivities, local temple fairs, and seasonal village ceremonies, often worn or displayed to drive away harmful spirits and usher in good fortune for the coming year.

Carved from a single block of wood, the mask features exaggerated round eyes, strong arched brows, and a stylised mouth—hallmarks of southern Chinese folk aesthetics, where bold forms and vivid expression carried symbolic protective power. The surface is painted in red and black pigments, colours traditionally associated with strength, vitality, and the warding off of malevolent forces.

The reverse of the mask reveals clear tool marks, hollowed cavities for the eyes, and an aged, naturally worn wooden interior—all indicative of authentic, hand-made rural craftsmanship. Its weathered surface, softened edges, and layers of pigment loss suggest long-term ritual use and handling, contributing to the piece’s unmistakable presence and cultural significance.

Mounted on a minimalist black metal stand, the mask displays beautifully as a sculptural object, balancing raw folk character with strong visual impact.

Note: The piece will be lightly touched up and conditioned by our restoration team prior to delivery.
