About

Chin Totem Post with Man on Horse and Elephant Motifs

This impressive carved totem originates from the highland Chin communities of Myanmar, where such posts once stood outside family homes as symbols of status, lineage, and spiritual protection. Sculpted from a single piece of teak, the totem features a stacked narrative of figures, including a man seated on a horse and a stylised elephant—two motifs associated with leadership, bravery, and prosperity in Chin culture. These carvings often commemorated important events such as successful hunts, social rank, or ancestral achievements.

Exposed for generations to the natural elements, the surface of the teak displays a beautifully weathered patina shaped by sun, rain, and termite activity. The softened contours and erosion patterns reflect its authentic life outdoors, where such posts served both ceremonial and protective functions. Today, surviving examples are increasingly scarce. As many Chin communities converted to Christianity in the 20th century, missionaries encouraged the destruction of animist ritual objects, resulting in the loss of countless totemic carvings.

This piece stands as a rare witness to that cultural heritage — a sculptural artefact that bridges ethnographic history and contemporary aesthetic appeal, offering both striking presence and profound narrative depth.

Note: The piece will be lightly touched up and conditioned by our restoration team prior to delivery.
