Ancient Chinese Wooden Tomb Attendant Figure

This carved wooden attendant figure was originally placed within a Chinese burial tomb, where it served as a symbolic companion for the deceased. In ancient China, it was believed that the spirit would continue to live on in the afterlife much as it did in life, and therefore required attendants, animals, guardians, and objects to ensure comfort and protection in eternity. Alongside terracotta figures, bronze animals, and wooden effigies, pieces like this were buried to accompany and serve the departed.

Hand-carved from hardwood, the figure displays a simplified, almost abstract form typical of early funerary carvings. The softened contours and deep vertical crack running through the torso reflect long-term burial conditions and natural wood ageing. The neck was broken during the drying process, and an early repair was attempted, though it remains visible and imperfect. Despite this, the figure retains strong sculptural presence and remarkable archaeological character.
