A superbly carved cedar wood door attributed to the renowned 19th-century master carpenter Mohammad Jan of Madyan, a historic craft town in the Swat Valley of Northern Pakistan. Known for his exceptional skill in architectural carving, Mohammad Jan’s work is celebrated for its layered geometric structures, fluid vegetal scrolls, and symbolic starburst rosettes — all executed with astonishing precision.

This monumental door showcases his signature vocabulary: deep-relief floral medallions, interlocking vines, twisting tendrils, and meticulously patterned borders that frame the panels like woven textiles. The upper frieze is especially notable, packed with swirling botanicals and star motifs that exemplify the rich artistic traditions of the region.

Carved from aromatic Himalayan cedar, the surface bears its original patina, softened by age and touched with the warm tonality of centuries. As an architectural artwork, it embodies the harmony, protection, and beauty central to Swati domestic design, making it not only a functional object but a masterwork of ethnographic sculpture.
