This rare North Korean Bandaji blanket chest reflects the distinctive aesthetic of the Sung Sun I style, a regional craft tradition recognised for its bold geometric ironwork and symbolic motifs. Chests of this type were used in Korean households to store blankets, bedding, and seasonal textiles — essential items that required careful protection in cold climates.

Crafted from sturdy pine wood and fully clad with hand-forged iron plates, the front of the chest features decorative patterns that imitate traditional Korean paper-cut designs. These metal appliqués weren’t merely ornamental; they served both as protection and as expressions of household identity, as iron was believed to ward off misfortune and safeguard valuables.

The chest’s heavy, architectural construction and weathered surface speak to years of practical domestic use. Today, its sculptural façade and warm patina make it a compelling accent in contemporary interiors — functioning beautifully as a console, side table, or storage piece while preserving a piece of Korean craft history.
