Antique Chinese Northern Elm (Yumu) Octagonal Architectural Low Table

A monumental octagonal coffee table centered around an authentic late Qing Dynasty architectural carving, reinterpreted as a functional object of exceptional scale and presence.

The intricately carved openwork panel dates to the 19th century and was likely originally conceived as a decorative architectural element within a Northern Chinese residence—possibly a chuanhua gable ornament or courtyard window screen. Salvaged and later sourced from an antique restoration workshop in Beijing in 2001, the historic panel was carefully framed within an octagonal tabletop and paired with low, structurally sympathetic legs.

Constructed entirely through traditional Chinese joinery, the table contains no modern screws, bolts, or metal fasteners. The restrained intervention preserves the integrity and craftsmanship of the original architectural fragment while allowing it to exist within a contemporary context.
