Korean Wooden Hamji Small Side Table

Based on its form and construction, this is a traditional Korean wooden basin (hamji, 함지) mounted on a later wooden stand. While it is now suitable as a decorative side table or planter, the bowl itself was originally a utilitarian household object rather than a piece of furniture.

This large hand-carved hamji is made from a single block of red pine wood. The deep circular bowl features a thick rounded rim and displays a rich dark brown patina developed through decades of use. The interior reveals attractive concentric growth rings, while the exterior retains subtle tool marks that testify to its hand-carved construction.

The bowl rests on a simple four-sided wooden stand with arched feet. Although the stand harmonizes well with the bowl, it is almost certainly a later addition, allowing the vessel to be displayed as a functional decorative object.

Traditionally, hamji were indispensable in Korean households during the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910) and well into the early 20th century. They were used for washing vegetables, mixing grains, kneading dough, preparing kimchi, or collecting food ingredients. Wealthier families often owned several bowls of different sizes for various domestic tasks. Large bowls were carved from a single piece of wood, ensuring exceptional durability.

The bowl shown here has acquired a beautiful surface through long use and careful handling. Today, it can serve as a striking decorative centerpiece, a fruit bowl, or, as you have demonstrated, a unique side table when fitted with a glass top.
