About

Chinese Neolithic Pottery Jar, Majiayao Culture

This rare Neolithic pottery jar originates from the Majiayao culture, a group of early agricultural communities that lived in what is now Gansu and parts of Sichuan, China. The vessel is distinguished by its bold hand-painted geometric patterns, including concentric circles and linear motifs, which are characteristic of Majiayao ceramic tradition. Created for daily or ritual use, the jar reflects both functional purpose and early symbolic expression. Thanks to the region’s dry climate, the pottery has been preserved in notably good condition, allowing the painted decoration to remain clearly visible. Today, it stands as an important archaeological and sculptural object representing early Chinese ceramic artistry.
