About

Thai Naga Architectural Finial - Set of 2

These intricately carved Thai Naga finials once adorned a traditional temple or ceremonial structure, serving as protective and auspicious motifs in Buddhist architecture. The Naga—mythical serpent guardian—symbolises protection, purification, and the safeguarding of sacred spaces.

Hand-carved from solid teak, each piece retains its original layers of red and black lacquer, now beautifully worn to reveal a naturally aged surface. The bodies of the Nagas are inlaid with krajok chuen—small hammered lead plates coated with coloured mercury—a rare and traditional decorative technique found in older Thai craftsmanship. These shimmering fragments would have once caught the light, giving the Naga a jewel-like radiance during rituals or temple ceremonies.

The carving is lively and expressive, with bold scales, sharp fangs, and dramatic crest forms typical of Northern and Central Thai temple ornamentation. Despite their age, the pieces retain striking colour contrasts and formidable sculptural presence. Mounted on minimalist black metal stands, they function beautifully as sculptural art objects—historic, mystical, and visually compelling.
Note: The piece will be lightly touched up and conditioned by our restoration team prior to delivery.
