Thai Lanna Temple Eave Bracket with Hanuman Figure

This expressive carved eave bracket once formed part of the structural support system of a traditional Thai temple. Mounted to a wooden column and extending outward to help support the roof, these brackets were not only functional but richly symbolic. This example depicts Hanuman, the revered monkey general from the Ramakien (Thai Ramayana), shown in a dynamic climbing posture. His form is carved in relief from solid teak and retains traces of its original black lacquer base, overlaid with vibrant purple and red pigments, characteristic of temple ornamentation.

Hanuman is celebrated for strength, loyalty, and protection — fitting qualities for an architectural element designed to guard and uphold sacred space. Weathered through decades of temple use, the surface shows natural wear, pigment fading, and age cracks, all contributing to its authentic historic presence. Mounted on a custom stand, the bracket now serves as a striking sculptural artwork with strong cultural resonance.
