This long, gracefully curved bamboo pole originates from the Lanna Kingdom of Northern Thailand, where it functioned as a ceremonial basket carrier. Unlike the everyday bamboo poles used by villagers for transporting goods, ceremonial poles were reserved for ritual occasions, festivals, and temple offerings — which explains why this example survives in remarkably good condition.

The pole is coated in layers of deep red lacquer, a finish traditionally associated with auspiciousness, merit-making, and sacred rituals in Lanna culture. Red lacquer was rarely applied to utilitarian tools; it was reserved for objects participating in temple ceremonies, processions, or offerings carried to monasteries.
